What is an Academic Coach?

An Academic Coach partners with the student and their family to help the student discover motivation, enhance their academic skill set, gain confidence, and improve overall performance.  An Academic Coach can help the student study smarter, not harder, by developing skills in:

  • Goal Setting
  • Learning Strategies
  • Time/Life/Project Management
  • Test Preparation

Academic Coaching builds confidence, minimizes stress and teaches students to become more effective learners.

What's the difference between a Tutor and an Academic Coach?

The Academic Coach usually does not work with the actual academic content; rather, they help the student with time management, organization, study skills and self-advocacy. Academic Coaches teach students how to work smarter, and become excellent students.

Your Academic Coach – Not a Tutor, a Team Member.

Why have an Academic Coach?

An Academic Coach can help design customized learning strategies for a student to thrive and achieve academic success.

"Give a student a tutor and his homework is done for a day. Coach students to manage their work and themselves, and they will be effective for a lifetime." — Beyond BookSmart Proverb

An Academic Coach can teach students life skills, and help develop the necessary habits to allow them to succeed in a particular subject where they are experiencing difficulty.  Students will learn self-advocacy which is essential as they navigate their academic journey. We work with students to develop a high level of initiative and follow-through that will be instrumental when faced with challenges.

How do you help with Homework?

Many students lack Executive Function skills such as initiative, time management and follow through. We train students to prioritize their homework based upon due dates and the relative importance of each assignment. We teach our students the process of task completion and the important skill often forgotten- turning in homework!

How do you help with Test Preparation?

Academic Coaching teaches students how to study for and how to take an exam. The goal of Academic Coaching is to prepare students for higher levels of education and for the real world.

Executive Function Skills for Project Management

Academic Coaching teaches the self-management skills required for success on long-term projects. Students learn:

  • How to break down the many steps needed to complete a project
  • How to properly sequence those steps
  • How to map out the time needed to complete projects well AND on time

If your child is struggling with project management, then an Academic Coach is a wise choice!

Do you give Academic Coaching for Students with Special Needs?

Whether a person experiences visual impairments, hearing loss, ADHD, learning disabilities, chronic or temporary mental/health conditions, there are times when students are less able to be fully present. Academic Coaching is a working partnership that focuses on the "process of learning". This team (Coach and student) works closely to create and put in place more effective strategies than are the norm. The goal is to heighten awareness of what it takes to achieve academic success and anchor this with new strategies, a supportive relationship, and personal accountability.

Will you provide a Supportive Relationship?

Academic Coaches just meet students where they are academically and emotionally. It really does take a village to raise a child. Your village most likely already includes extended family members, friends, and teachers. If your student is struggling, it may be time to add an Academic Coach to your village. An Academic Coach can help your child overcome academic hurdles and reach academic goals while taking the pressure, stress and frustration off of YOU!
